How to Prepare Scrap Metal for Sale

Why prepare scrap before selling

Proper scrap metal preparation directly affects the final price — it can differ by 15-25% depending on how well sorted and cleaned the scrap is from foreign materials.

Step 1. Sort metal by type

Separate scrap into distinct categories: copper separately, aluminium separately, brass, stainless steel and ferrous metal — into different containers or bags.

Step 2. Remove large non-metal parts

Remove plastic, wood, and rubber parts from the scrap if possible without excessive effort — contamination lowers the final price.

Step 3. Don't burn cables and wires

A common mistake is burning insulation off copper cable hoping for a higher price. In reality, burnt copper is valued lower than insulated cable because fire oxidizes the metal and degrades its quality.

Step 4. Don't wash or clean metal specially

Many people mistakenly spend time washing scrap before selling — this doesn't affect the price, as valuation is based on metal type and grade, not surface cleanliness.

Step 5. Determine approximate volume in advance

If you have a large batch (from 1 tonne), tell us the approximate volume by phone so we can arrange free pickup and prepare transport of the right capacity.

Step 6. Prepare documents if selling as a legal entity

Individuals usually just need a passport. Legal entities need invoices for the scrap batch — reputable collection points like Avto-Vikom issue all necessary documents.
